Himachal CM Urges PM Modi to Ban Apple Imports from Turkey

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government to ban apple imports from Turkey, citing the adverse impact on local growers.
Speaking to reporters in Shimla, Sukhu said the influx of imported apples, especially from Turkey and the United States, has hurt apple farmers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir by pushing down market prices. “Horticulturists have put in years of hard work to establish Himachal as an apple-growing state, and it’s disheartening when their produce fails to get fair prices,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that he would raise the issue directly with the Prime Minister during a meeting of chief ministers scheduled for May 24 in Delhi. “I’ll personally bring this to his attention,” he stated.
Himachal Pradesh’s apple industry is a key contributor to the state’s economy, with an estimated worth of ₹4,500 crore.
In other announcements, Sukhu said that offices of regulatory authorities, such as those overseeing GST and real estate, would be shifted out of Shimla in an effort to ease congestion in the city. However, he clarified that regular government departments would continue operating from the state capital.
To support women employees, Sukhu said they would have the option to remain posted in Shimla. New recruits would be placed in the relocated offices. He also mentioned that infrastructure built by the previous BJP government in Dharamshala and Mandi — currently lying unused — would now be put to use.
Welcoming visitors, Sukhu assured that Himachal Pradesh remains a safe and peaceful destination for tourists looking to enjoy its natural beauty.
