Indian Man Wrestled, Handcuffed, and Detained at Newark Airport for Illegal Entry into US

An Indian national who was recently detained at Newark Airport in New Jersey had entered the United States without a valid visa, according to sources familiar with the situation.

A video of the incident, shared on social media by a non-resident Indian on June 8, went viral and sparked strong reactions in India. The footage shows U.S. security personnel forcibly restraining the young man and placing him in handcuffs at the airport.

Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the man, who is from Haryana, was in the U.S. without legal documentation. “Our consulate in New York has verified that he entered the country without a valid visa. A U.S. court has ordered his deportation,” one source said.

The incident reportedly occurred while the man was transiting through Newark Airport. Authorities deemed his behavior “not conducive to travel,” after which he was restrained and taken to a medical facility for evaluation. “He will be deported to India once he is medically cleared for travel,” the source added. The Indian consulate in New York is in touch with U.S. authorities and continues to monitor the case.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi addressed the broader issue in a social media post on Tuesday. Without naming anyone specifically, the embassy stated, “There is no right to visit the United States. We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of U.S. law,” while also reaffirming that the U.S. remains open to legitimate travelers.
