PM Modi Speaks to Putin on Birthday, Reaffirms Strong India-Russia Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to extend birthday wishes on the Russian leader’s 73rd birthday. During the phone call, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the long-standing partnership between India and Russia.
PM Modi conveyed his best wishes to President Putin for good health and continued success. The two leaders also used the opportunity to review key aspects of their bilateral relationship, reiterating their shared goal of deepening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership that has existed between the two nations for decades.
President Putin briefed the Prime Minister on the latest developments in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In response, Modi reiterated India’s consistent position on the matter — calling for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the crisis through dialogue and negotiation. He thanked Putin for sharing detailed updates and emphasised the need for de-escalation and constructive engagement.
The leaders also discussed preparations for the upcoming 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, which is scheduled to be held later this year. Prime Minister Modi formally invited President Putin to visit India for the summit, reaffirming the importance of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries.
Just last week, President Putin confirmed that he would be travelling to India in early December. Speaking to reporters, he referred to Modi as a "dear friend" and expressed his eagerness to meet him again. He noted that the two countries have always shared close and friendly ties, dating back to the Soviet era.
Putin also praised India’s independent foreign policy, particularly in the context of its decision to continue purchasing Russian oil despite pressure from Western countries. He pointed out that New Delhi's refusal to yield to external pressure had protected its economic interests and demonstrated national pride.
“India will not allow itself to be humiliated by anyone. I know Prime Minister Modi — he will never make a decision that goes against the interest of his people,” Putin said. He also mentioned that giving up Russian energy would have cost India an estimated $9–10 billion, and the outcome would have been the same even if sanctions had been imposed.
The call between the two leaders underscored the steady momentum in India-Russia relations and highlighted their shared vision for a multipolar and balanced global order.
