Ukrainian President Zelensky Talks Peace with PM Modi Amid US Tariffs on India

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, urging India to support peace efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. The conversation comes as India faces steep tariffs from the United States over its purchase of Russian oil.

In a statement, Zelensky emphasized the importance of India backing Ukraine’s peace initiatives. “It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation. Other formats will not deliver results,” he said.

PM Modi responded by reaffirming India’s clear and consistent stance on the conflict. “I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine,” Modi said on X (formerly Twitter).

Zelensky also called for stronger sanctions on Russia, highlighting the need to limit Russian energy exports—especially oil—to cut off funding for the war. This comes as the US has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

US President Donald Trump had initially added a 25 percent tariff, accusing India of “fueling the war machine.” In reply, PM Modi made it clear that India would not sacrifice the interests of its farmers, even if it means facing economic consequences.

“For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it,” Modi stated firmly.

The dialogue between Zelensky and Modi reflects the complex balance India is trying to maintain—supporting peace in Ukraine while protecting its own economic and strategic interests.
