US Says Hostage Deal with Hamas '90% Done', Trump Warns of 'Obliteration' if Group Refuses Peace

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that a deal with Hamas for the release of Israeli hostages is “90 percent done,” signaling significant progress in ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Gaza conflict. Speaking during an interview, Rubio said that Hamas has "basically" agreed to President Donald Trump's proposal and that discussions are now focused on finalizing logistical arrangements for the release.

“Most of this has been worked out. We are just finalising the logistical piece,” Rubio said, according to Reuters. He added that the United States would know “very quickly” whether Hamas is serious about following through, as technical-level talks are currently underway.

The proposed agreement would involve Hamas releasing all hostages in exchange for Israel withdrawing its forces to what is being referred to as the “yellow line” — the position held by Israeli troops within Gaza as of mid-August. “Priority number one, the one that we think we can achieve very quickly, hopefully, is the release of all the hostages,” Rubio said.

Rubio also revealed that Hamas has agreed “in principle” to begin discussions on the future governance of Gaza once the ongoing war comes to an end. He noted that while the group has not committed to specific terms, it has accepted the general idea of negotiating a post-war framework. “A lot of details are going to have to be worked out,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Hamas, saying the militant group would face “complete obliteration” if it refuses to relinquish control over Gaza and participate in the peace process. Speaking to CNN, Trump made it clear that the United States is committed to resolving the conflict and expects Hamas to show a serious willingness to negotiate.

When asked whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is supportive of ending the military campaign and backing the US-led peace plan, Trump responded, “Yes on Bibi.”

Trump concluded by saying he expects to know soon whether Hamas is committed to the peace process and whether the hostage deal can be fully implemented.
