Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has received the much-awaited report from the expert committee formed by the state government to examine the possibility of enacting a law to ban polygamy. The committee, headed by retired Guwahati High Court Judge Rumi Phukan, has recommended that the state does indeed possess the right to formulate such a law. However, the legislation would require final assent from the President and not the Governor.

Speaking to journalists in Guwahati, CM Sarma confirmed that the report highlights the need for clarity on the eligible age for marriage for all individuals under the proposed polygamy law. This measure aims to align the law with existing state laws on Muslim marriages and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

"We have an Assembly session scheduled from September 16, and we might table the legislation during that session or in the upcoming budget session early next year. It's crucial to allow ample time for Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to discuss and debate the issue. Our goal is to implement the law within this financial year," he stated.

The Chief Minister further asserted that the feedback received from diverse communities in the state indicates widespread support for such legislation. He emphasized that this move brings Assam closer to fostering a positive ecosystem for women's empowerment, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.

The proposed law seeks to address concerns surrounding polygamy, a practice prevalent in some regions, by safeguarding the rights and dignity of women. The legislation aims to promote gender equality and ensure that all marriages adhere to the prescribed eligible age criteria, in line with the state's commitment to protect the interests of its citizens.

CM Sarma shared his optimism regarding the positive impact this law could have on women's empowerment in the state, marking a significant milestone in Assam's journey towards progressive social reforms.
