New Delhi, 15 October. The MSME sector is the driving engine of development in India, and the central government must give it even greater attention. The scope of MSMEs in the country is expanding rapidly. The number of registered micro, small, and medium enterprises has crossed 69 million and is marching toward the 70 million mark. Experts believe that the target of 70 million could be achieved in the last quarter of this year. This information was shared by MSME expert G. Shanmuganathan.

Mr. Shanmuganathan, former In-Charge Industrial Advisor to the MSME Ministry, Government of India, explained that due to the special interest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the pace of growth in the MSME sector is better than ever before. He said that IEDS officers are working across the country like dedicated karmayogis. However, delays in promotions, lack of benefits, discrimination compared to officers from other cadres, and the obstinacy of weak bureaucratic leadership are preventing optimal results. He added that MSMEs are emerging as a strong pillar in accelerating the pace of self-reliance.

He stated that in a country with a population of nearly 1.5 billion, achieving the true potential of MSME development requires the organized growth of the Indian Enterprise Development Service and its immediate liberation from the control of the Indian Economic Service. He acknowledged that the establishment of a separate MSME Ministry has not yet delivered the expected outcomes.

Mr. Shanmuganathan made it clear that to go beyond the target of 70 million Udyam registrations, the inclusive expansion of micro, small, and medium enterprises across various states is essential. Engineers in the country can play an effective role in this, but they need encouragement and a professional environment at the government level.
