Delhi Introduces App-Based Premium Bus Service, a Historic First in India

Update: 2023-10-20 08:59 GMT

In a historic first for the national capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the approval of the Premium Bus Aggregator Scheme, introducing app-based premium bus services in Delhi. This revolutionary initiative offers a luxurious travel experience to Delhiites with top-notch amenities, including Wi-Fi, GPS, and CCTV facilities. Passengers can book their seats through a dedicated mobile app, eliminating the need for traditional ticketing and prohibiting standing during the journey.

Notably, the scheme prioritizes environmental sustainability by mandating that only CNG buses newer than three years and electric buses can be part of the fleet after January 1, 2025, aligning with the government's commitment to reducing air pollution.

Under the Premium Bus Aggregator Scheme, licensed operators must include a minimum of 25 buses in their fleet, with each bus having at least nine seats. Operators have the autonomy to determine bus routes and fares, but fares cannot exceed those of DTC AC buses.

Chief Minister Kejriwal expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone project, mentioning that it has been eight years in the making. He explained that since the Delhi Metro became operational, Delhiites switched to the metro for transportation, discarding their personal vehicles. Gradually, the Delhi Metro became crowded, so people had to switch back to their vehicles. Although the government has increased the number of DTC buses in the city, they are still not very crowded, based on a recent survey.

The Premium Bus Aggregator Scheme aims to encourage people from the upper and middle economic class to opt for premium buses. By providing a luxurious and efficient travel experience, these buses aim to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. The flexible fare system will ensure that fares remain competitive while not undercutting DTC's AC buses.

This initiative faced various hurdles over the years, including administrative and political challenges. However, the scheme is now set to become a reality following amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act and extensive public consultation.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proudly stated, "Delhi will be the first city in the entire country to introduce the premium bus aggregator scheme. I believe this will greatly benefit the people of Delhi. Traffic congestion will also be reduced. Delhiites will now have access to world-class transportation services, and pollution will decrease as well. The scheme will be implemented within 90 days of its approval from LG."

With the introduction of app-based premium bus services, Delhi makes a significant leap in enhancing its public transportation system, providing a more convenient and eco-friendly option for its residents.
