Deepika Padukone Exits Kalki 2898 AD Sequel, Producers Make Blunt Statement: ‘This Film Deserves Commitment’
Vyjayanthi Movies has announced that Deepika Padukone will not be returning for the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD, subtly attributing the decision to a lack of commitment.
Production house Vyjayanthi Movies has made a surprising announcement that has left many Deepika Padukone fans disappointed. In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the makers confirmed that the actress will not be returning for the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD.
"This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways," the post read. However, it was the tone of the announcement that raised eyebrows. Many felt it hinted at underlying tensions between the actress and the production team. “Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works,” they added, implying a lack of alignment behind the scenes.
Deepika had a central role in Kalki 2898 AD, starring alongside Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Disha Patani. Her absence from the sequel has sparked widespread speculation and debate online. Some fans expressed disappointment, while others questioned the reasons behind her exit. “Nag Ashwin should be ready to face the music from Deepika fans,” wrote one user. Another speculated, “I don't think it's about Prabhas or Spirit. It might be something else.”
This isn’t the first time Deepika has parted ways with a project involving Prabhas. She recently walked out of Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, reportedly due to differences over working conditions. Rumors suggested that Deepika had asked for an 8-hour workday, a share in the profits, and to not speak her lines in Telugu — conditions that allegedly didn’t go down well with the makers. She was eventually replaced by Triptii Dimri.
Meanwhile, fans have already begun suggesting replacements. Names like Keerthy Suresh, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Mrunal Thakur are being thrown into the mix, with some even criticizing Deepika’s performance in the original film.
Whether the sequel will soar without Deepika remains to be seen, but the buzz around her exit is only adding to the anticipation.
