The Karnataka government has told the Supreme Court that it will ensure security at theaters if Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’ is released in the state. The court also made it clear that if any threats are made to stop the film from screening, the government must act against those responsible for creating unrest.

A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan took note of the state’s promise to provide adequate protection for theaters.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court expressed strong disappointment with the Karnataka government after the film wasn’t shown in theaters due to protests. The court emphasized that mobs and vigilantes can’t be allowed to take control of public spaces.

The controversy began after Kamal Haasan made comments about the Kannada language, which angered local activists. In response, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce said the film wouldn’t be screened in the state unless Haasan apologized.

Protesters held demonstrations, filed complaints, and warned theaters against showing the movie.

The matter reached the Supreme Court when M Mahesh Reddy filed a petition challenging the film’s non-release. After the government gave its assurance, the court closed the case, saying no further orders were needed.
