Gadkari's Vision: Transforming India's Future - A Revolutionary Green Agenda for Carbon Neutrality by 2070

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform India's construction sector, paving the way for the nation's transition to carbon neutrality by 2070. This monumental initiative aligns with the vision set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to steer India towards a sustainable and environmentally responsible future.

 

Speaking at a press conference held in the capital, Gadkari shared key insights into the transformative measures that will be implemented to reduce India's carbon footprint.

 

One of the most noteworthy strategies involves the integration of municipal waste into road construction. The Transport Ministry is currently finalizing a policy that will utilize municipal waste materials in the construction of roads, a pioneering step towards efficient waste management and eco-friendly infrastructure development. Additionally, the government is contemplating providing incentives to construction equipment manufacturers who opt for eco-friendly practices by abstaining from fossil fuels.

 

Addressing the 'Swachhta Hi Seva Pakhwada' campaign, Gadkari emphasized the commitment to cleanliness and waste reduction. An extensive program is in place, encompassing cleanliness drives at 13,000 locations along national highways, including roadside amenities, dhabas, and toll plazas. Remarkably, nearly 7,000 locations have already witnessed successful implementation of these initiatives.

 

Gadkari underlined the pressing environmental issue of daily solid waste disposal in urban areas, with approximately 10,000 hectares of land currently occupied by dumpsites. The Ministry is actively exploring innovative solutions to harness urban solid waste for highway construction. Through visionary leadership and cutting-edge technology, it aims to demonstrate that wealth can be created from waste.

 

Switching gears to alternative biofuels, Gadkari expressed his strong support for establishing an ethanol economy in India. He is fervently pushing for the widespread adoption of ethanol, with the objective of boosting agricultural growth by 6 percent and creating an ethanol economy valued at Rs 2 lakh crore. The recent launch of the world's first BS-6-compliant Flex Fuel Strong Hybrid vehicle in Delhi is a groundbreaking achievement. This vehicle operates on 100 percent ethanol, promising economic savings exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore. The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) plant in Panipat plays a pivotal role by converting agricultural waste, such as rice straw, into ethanol and bio bitumen.

 

Furthermore, Gadkari revealed that his ministry has undertaken several initiatives to decarbonize the transport sector. The government is actively working on the development of an electric highway connecting Delhi and Jaipur. This cutting-edge concept mirrors the electric traction system employed by railways and draws inspiration from countries like Sweden and Norway. Electric highways involve the provision of power cables that electric vehicles can connect to for traction. Presently, the ministry is in the process of evaluating various technologies to bring this groundbreaking vision to life.
