Home Minister Amit Shah Appeals for Cooperation in Discussing Manipur Issue Amid Parliament Logjams

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaches out to opposition leaders for resolution on Manipur crisis as disruptions persist in Parliament

Update: 2023-07-25 11:05 GMT

Home Minister Amit Shah, to break the ongoing logjam in Parliament over the Manipur issue, has sought cooperation from opposition leaders in initiating discussions on the matter. The Parliament has been witnessing disruptions for four consecutive days, with the opposition demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi before any debate on the crisis.

In letters addressed to Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Shah emphasized the significance of Manipur as a crucial border state with a rich cultural heritage, not only for the region but for the entire nation. He pointed out that during the six years of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in Manipur, the state experienced an era of peace and development. However, recent court decisions and incidents of violence have disrupted the peace in the state.

Today, I wrote to the opposition leaders of both houses, Shri @adhirrcinc Ji of Lok Sabha, and Shri @kharge Ji of Rajya Sabha, appealing to them for their invaluable cooperation in the discussion of the Manipur issue.

The trigger for the crisis was an order from the Manipur high court recommending the inclusion of the dominant Meitei community in the scheduled tribe list. This decision led to violence in the state, including appalling incidents that have sparked nationwide outrage.

The Home Minister expressed the government's readiness to make a statement on Manipur in both Houses of Parliament, followed by a discussion. He urged all parties to rise above party politics and stand with the people of Manipur during this challenging time. The ongoing disruptions in Parliament have prevented meaningful discussions on the matter, leading to an impasse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his two-month public silence on the ethnic clashes, condemning the mob assaults on two women from the Kuki-Zomi community who were paraded naked. However, the opposition insists that a direct reference to the larger violence in Manipur is necessary.

The Manipur crisis has resulted in more than 150 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and thousands seeking shelter in relief camps. The shocking incident of the two women being sexually assaulted by a mob has intensified demands for the sacking of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

In conclusion, Home Minister Amit Shah's appeal for cooperation from opposition leaders is aimed at finding a resolution to the Manipur issue and ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament. As the logjam persists, the nation awaits a bipartisan approach to address the critical situation in Manipur and bring about much-needed peace and stability to the region.
