Assam CM Says Viscera Report Brings Clarity to Zubeen Garg Death Probe
Investigation gains momentum as more NRIs set to record statements; several arrests made in case surrounding the singer’s suspicious death in Singapore
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the recent report on the viscera samples of cultural icon Zubeen Garg has provided a clear direction to the ongoing investigation into his death. Garg passed away under suspicious circumstances while swimming in the sea in Singapore last month.
Following Garg’s death on September 19, the Assam Police’s CID registered cases of murder, criminal conspiracy, and death due to negligence. After the first post-mortem was conducted in Singapore, a second post-mortem took place in Guwahati, during which viscera samples were collected and sent to the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi for analysis. The CFSL report was submitted to the CID last Friday and then forwarded to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, where experts are preparing a comprehensive post-mortem report.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Sarma said the viscera sample report has brought clarity to the investigation. “I believe that within a few days, the entire sequence of events surrounding Zubeen’s death will be submitted to the court. We are now much more confident that the investigation is progressing as expected,” he said.
The CM also announced that four more Assamese NRIs connected to the case would arrive in Guwahati on Monday to record their statements before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam CID. So far, one NRI has already provided a statement, while six others are yet to appear. Sarma urged these remaining individuals to cooperate with the probe, warning that legal action could be taken if they fail to comply.
Zubeen Garg had traveled to Singapore to participate in the North East India Festival, an event celebrating the region’s culture. During the event, he attended a yacht party organized by Assamese NRIs, where he collapsed while swimming and was later declared dead in hospital.
To date, the CID has arrested seven individuals linked to the case, including festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and Garg’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, who is also an Assam Police Service officer. The investigation is also probing financial irregularities involving Mahanta. Two of Garg’s personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora, have been arrested over alleged mishandling of the singer’s funds, although they were not in Singapore when he died.
Sarma assured the public that, following the viscera report, the process of delivering justice for Zubeen Garg would accelerate and pledged to fulfill his earlier promise of justice for the late singer.
