Assam Rifles Seize Massive Cache of Explosives Near Myanmar Border in Mizoram
5,800 Gelignite Rods, 6,000 Detonators Recovered; Two Arrested in Vaphai Village During High-Stakes Operation to Thwart Smuggling Network
In a major operation, Assam Rifles personnel recovered a large cache of explosives from Vaphai village in Champhai district, located on Mizoram's border with Myanmar. The explosives, believed to be intended for illicit use, were seized during a daring pursuit, and two individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt.
According to a press release issued by Assam Rifles today, the operation followed specific intelligence reports regarding the transshipment of warlike stores through the region. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, Assam Rifles launched a covert operation on Friday night in Vaphai village.
In the early hours of yesterday, their team attempted to intercept a Bolero Camper vehicle suspected of carrying the explosives. When the vehicle was signaled to stop, the occupants tried to flee, but were captured after a brief chase.
Upon searching the vehicle, the team discovered an alarming haul: 5,800 Gelignite Rods, 10,500 meters of Cordtex (a type of explosive fuse), and 6,000 detonators, all stashed in the vehicle. The two individuals arrested were identified as Lalrinsanga and Vanlalliana, both the residents of Farkawn village, located nearby.
The explosives, along with the detained individuals, were handed over to the Dungtlang Police Station for further investigation. Authorities are now working to establish the full scope of the smuggling operation and determine whether there are any larger networks involved in the illegal trafficking of explosives.
This seizure marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms and explosives trafficking along the sensitive Mizoram-Myanmar border, an area prone to such clandestine activities due to its proximity to conflict zones.
