The Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes Welfare Department of the Government of Bihar has achieved significant achievements in the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25 under various scholarship schemes being run for the educational development and encouragement of the backward class and extremely backward class students of the state. Lakhs of students have benefited from these schemes, which has increased their encouragement towards education and they have got financial assistance.

Mukhyamantri Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme

This scheme is one of the major scholarship schemes run by the department. In the financial year 2024-25, about 48 lakh 94 thousand students have benefited under this scheme. A total amount of Rs 598 crore has been distributed to these students, which has helped them to continue their pre-matric education.

Mukhyamantri Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme-2023

This scheme is for those students who are pursuing studies after matriculation. In the financial year 2023-24, a total amount of Rs 126 crore was distributed to about 2 lakh 43 thousand beneficiaries under this scheme. Earlier, in the financial year 2022-23 also, about 3 lakh beneficiaries got the benefit of about Rs 160 crore, which shows that this scheme is providing continuous support to the students even at the post-matric level.

Mukhyamantri Extremely Backward Class Merit Scholarship Scheme

This scheme is being run especially with the aim of encouraging meritorious students of extremely backward classes. In the financial year 2024-25, about 1 lakh 10 thousand students have benefited from this scheme. These include about 49 thousand girls and about 61 thousand boys. A total amount of Rs 110 crore has been distributed to these meritorious students, helping them to fulfill their dreams of higher education.

Chief Minister Backward Classes Merit Scholarship Scheme

The Chief Minister Backward Classes Merit Scholarship Scheme, operated for the students of backward classes, has also achieved significant success. In the financial year 2024-25, a total amount of Rs 77 crore has been distributed to about 77 thousand beneficiaries under this scheme. This scheme provides assistance to the meritorious students of backward classes in their educational journey.

In total, about 50 lakh students have benefited from these scholarship schemes of Bihar Government in the financial year 2024-25 to the tune of about Rs 786 crore. The Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes Welfare Department, Government of Bihar, is committed to provide financial assistance to the socially and educationally weaker sections of the state and bring them into the mainstream. The main objective of these schemes is to encourage the students towards their education and ensure their active participation in the society, so that an empowered and educated Bihar can be created.
