CBI Takes Over Probe into Karur Stampede That Killed 41 at Vijay’s Rally
Supreme Court orders CBI investigation amid political tensions; families of victims await consolation from actor Vijay
A Special Team from CBI today arrived in Karur to probe the stampede which had
claimed 41 lives during TVK Founder and actor Vijay's political rally on September 27.
The CBI probe was ordered by the Supreme Court while passing interim orders on a plea filed by the TVK
against the SIT probe ordered by the Madras High Court.
In line with the Apex Court order, a CBI team which included a ASP and DSP arrived in Karur.
After getting the case documents from the SIT headed by IG Asra Garg, the CBI would commence its
formal investigation into the tragedy which had shook the entire nation.
Soon after the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin deputed senior Ministers to Karur to ensure
treatment for all the injured, held an high level emergency meeting at the State Secretariat past midnight
that day, announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh each to the bereaved family members and also appointed a
one-member commission headed by Retd Justice ms Aruna Jagadeesan to probe the tragedy.
Mr Stalin flew down to Trichy en route Karur in the wee hours, paid homage to the bodies of the victims
and consoled their family members. He also met the injured at the Hospital and enquired about the treatment
being given to them.
Later, Vijay too announced an assistance of Rs 20 lakh each to deceased family members and also decided
to adopt their family.
As the tragedy sent shock waves across the Nation, the BJP deputed a fact-finding NDA team headed by
Lok Sabha MP Hemamalini to probe the Karur tragedy.
The NDA team suspected something 'fishy', a demanded a Judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge
into the tragedy.
The Congress too followed suit and a team formed by it also visited Karur and conducted a probe.
Though leaders of various political parties visited Karur and met the families of the victims, Vijay has been
facing brickbats as he was yet to meet them and console them. His party has submitted a petition to the
Police seeking permission and to make elaborate arrangements for his visit to meet the victims.
After getting the police nod, Vijay is expected to visit Karur to meet the victims.
