Fresh rise in Covid-19 cases are seen in the country, with the number of active infections crossing 3,000 for the first time in more than two years. As of Saturday, there are 3,395 active cases across the country, according to the latest figures from the Union Health Ministry.

Kerala is currently the worst-hit state, with 1,336 active cases. Maharashtra follows with 467 cases, and Delhi has 375. Other states like Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh are also reporting a steady increase in cases.

The spike has been rapid in just few days, on May 22, there were only 257 active cases. By May 26, that number had jumped to 1,010, and now it’s more than tripled. In the last 24 hours alone, 685 new infections have been reported. Four people — one each in Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh — have died during the same period.

The last time India reported over 3,000 active cases was back on April 1, 2023.

Despite the sudden rise, health authorities say there’s no need for panic. Dr. Rajiv Behl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said, “We’re watching the situation closely. There’s no major cause for concern right now, but it’s important for everyone to stay alert and careful.”

Four subvariants of the Omicron strain — LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1 — have been detected in India, with the first three being the most widespread.

Kerala has seen five deaths, while Maharashtra has reported the most during this period with seven. There have been 22 reported Covid-related deaths across the country, since January 2025. On a more hopeful note, 1,170 people have recovered or been discharged since the start of the year.
