The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a money laundering probe against Chhangur Baba, aka Karimulla Shah, after uncovering a large illegal religious conversion network and huge illicit wealth accumulation. Officials say he amassed over Rs 100 crore, allegedly using foreign funds and fraudulent means to convert mainly Scheduled Castes and economically weaker sections.

The ED registered a case on July 9, following a complaint by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which arrested Chhangur Baba and his associate Neetu (alias Nasreen) in Lucknow on July 5. Both are in custody until July 16.

Chhangur Baba reportedly ran conversion activities from the Chand Auliya Dargah, using religious talks, psychological tactics, and a book to promote Islam, targeting vulnerable Hindu and underprivileged communities. His network spans multiple Indian states and international locations like Dubai, with large gatherings funded mainly by Middle Eastern contributions.

Investigations revealed he held 40 bank accounts with Rs 106 crore, much of it traced to Gulf countries. The ATS alleges he forced or coerced over 1,500 Hindu women and thousands of others into conversion. His son Naveen, also in jail, allegedly used Dubai funds to buy land and held a Swiss bank account.

Authorities have begun demolishing illegally built properties linked to him and are examining digital evidence to trace foreign funding routes. The Intelligence Bureau and National Investigation Agency are expected to join the probe.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called Chhangur Baba’s activities anti-national, and his Balrampur residence has already been demolished. Officials also revealed a minor girl linked to the case was allegedly converted abroad, though records still list her as Hindu.
