Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday termed the death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar as an “unfortunate incident” and assured his family of a thorough and impartial investigation. The 52-year-old officer was found dead on October 7 at his home in Chandigarh, with a gunshot wound and a note alleging caste-based discrimination and harassment by senior officers.

Speaking at the BJP’s state executive meeting in Panchkula, CM Saini led a two-minute silence in memory of the late officer and acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “No matter how influential the person involved, strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty. Our government is committed to delivering justice,” he said.

Following pressure from Kumar’s family, especially his wife IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, an FIR was filed by Chandigarh Police on Thursday against Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and 10 others for abetment to suicide. The family had earlier refused to allow the autopsy or cremation until the case was formally registered.

CM Saini revealed that he was in Japan when he received the news and immediately contacted Kumar’s wife, who was also part of the official delegation. He assured her of full government support and dispatched senior officials to be with the family.

In response to growing public and political scrutiny, the Chandigarh Police have formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. Headed by IG Pushpendra Kumar, the team includes senior officials like SSP Kanwardeep Kaur and SP City KM Priyanka. The SIT has been directed to conduct a comprehensive, time-bound investigation.

Kumar’s note named several current and former top officers, including DGP Kapur, former DGP Manoj Yadava, and ex-chief secretary TVSN Prasad, accusing them of harassment and caste-based discrimination.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with leaders from the Congress, AAP, and other parties visiting Kumar’s family to offer condolences. Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and BJP leader Anil Vij were also among those who paid their respects.

CM Saini cautioned against politicizing the issue, stating, “There should be no politics on such a sensitive matter. The focus must remain on justice.”
