Haryana IPS Officer Y. Puran Kumar Laid to Rest with Full Honours in Chandigarh

Nine days after his death by suicide, the senior officer was cremated as police, government officials, and family members gathered to pay their final respects.

Senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar was cremated on Wednesday, nine days after his death by suicide. The funeral procession began from his residence in Sector 24 at around 3 p.m. and reached the Sector 25 cremation ground an hour later.

A police contingent offered a ceremonial salute, and a large number of officers, government representatives, and family members paid their final respects. The late officer’s daughters lit the funeral pyre in the presence of relatives and senior officials.

Among those present were his wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, Cabinet Ministers Krishan Lal Panwar and Shyam Singh Rana, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Mishra, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, and newly appointed DGP OP Singh.

Earlier in the day, the post-mortem was conducted at PGI Chandigarh in the presence of a magistrate, with the entire procedure recorded on video.

The process lasted nearly four hours. Around 2:20 p.m., the ambulance carrying Puran Kumar’s body reached his residence before the final journey commenced. The senior IPS officer had died by suicide on October 7 at his official residence in Chandigarh. Several legislators, including Ambala MLA Nirmal Singh, Thanesar MLA Ashok Arora, and Mulana MLA Pooja Chaudhary, also paid tribute to the late officer.
