Heavy rain since Thursday has brought Gurugram to a standstill, causing massive traffic jams on key roads like Sohna Road, Rajiv Chowk, and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). Thousands of commuters were stuck for hours on Friday morning, turning the usual rush hour into a frustrating ordeal.

Many faced a nightmare navigating the waterlogged streets, especially with traffic signals not working and a shortage of traffic personnel. Office-goers reported getting stuck for over two hours just to travel a few kilometers. Shruti Mishra, a corporate employee, shared her experience: “I left Subhash Chowk at 10:15 am to reach Golf Course Extension Road and only made it to Golf Course Road by 12:30 pm. There were no traffic cops around, and some cars even had water entering their engines.”

Police have deployed extra personnel at major intersections to manage the chaos. Gurugram Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar said, “We put additional traffic staff at waterlogged spots like Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, and SPR to help with movement. But the heavy vehicle volume and flooding made progress slow.”

Social media was flooded with photos and videos showing submerged roads, long traffic jams, and stranded vehicles. Sohna Road looked more like a canal, with some people abandoning their vehicles and wading through knee-deep water.

Similar scenes unfolded near Rajiv Chowk and along the SPR, where flooding under flyovers created bottlenecks. Residents in Sectors 48, 49, 50, and 66 reported that auto drivers refused to take rides, while cab fares surged sharply on app-based services.

Ankit Rana, from Sector 67, said, “I picked up my daughter from tuition at 10 a.m. and got stuck on Sohna Road for over 90 minutes. Water was everywhere, and traffic just wouldn’t move.”

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) deployed teams with pumps to drain the water, but many areas remained flooded through midday. A GMDA official said, “Our teams are working nonstop to pump out water and clear the roads.”

With more rain expected, Gurugram’s infrastructure faces another tough challenge ahead.
