India’s active Covid-19 cases have climbed past the 4,000 mark as of Tuesday, just three days after surpassing 3,000, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The surge is primarily driven by rising infections in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Over the past 24 hours, Kerala registered the highest number of new cases at 1,416, followed by Maharashtra with 494 and Gujarat with 397. Nationwide, there was a net increase of 65 active cases, while 512 people recovered or were discharged.
The recent rise in infections has also seen a corresponding increase in fatalities. Between Monday and Tuesday, five Covid-related deaths were reported: one each from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, and two from Maharashtra.
According to health ministry details, the fatality in Kerala was an 80-year-old man with multiple comorbidities including severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. Maharashtra’s two deaths involved a 70-year-old woman with diabetes and a 73-year-old woman with both diabetes and hypertension.
