Is TVK Set to Join BJP? Vijay Holds Emergency Talks with District Leaders
Ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam weighs alliance options as BJP ramps up negotiations, even as CBI inquiry and personal pressures mount.
In the 2026 Assembly election arena, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is being seen as a potential game-changing party. At its inaugural conference, Vijay made a bold offer: “share power with alliance parties.” This was expected to pave the way for a mega alliance, an alternative to both DMK and AIADMK. Vijay particularly anticipated Congress approaching them. Yet, the reality turned out differently.
Congress has once again decided to travel with the DMK, marking a setback to Vijay’s initial strategy. Despite holding the “power-sharing card,” TVK’s vote bank and future potential, other parties hesitated to align with TVK. On the other hand, BJP appears to have deftly neutralized TVK’s attempts to draw smaller and influential parties to its side.
Currently, the TVK leader faces pressures both politically and personally. From the CBI investigation concerning the Karur joint congestion case to the release issues of the film Jananayagan and family matters, Vijay is under considerable strain. At the same time, if TVK contests independently, it could split votes and ultimately benefit the DMK alliance—something BJP is acutely aware of.
Leveraging this, BJP is actively trying to bring TVK onto its side. Earlier multi-stage negotiations in the background failed, prompting BJP to restart talks as a final effort. Reports suggest that in this context, Vijay’s camp is also contemplating “should we form an alliance with BJP?”
To discuss this, TVK General Secretary Anand conducted an emergency online meeting with district secretaries yesterday. Key deliberations focused on whether to stand independently, demonstrating strength, or manage current pressures by joining an alliance. Additionally, they considered the public perception: if TVK allies with BJP after previously declaring itself an “anti-policy” party, how will voters respond?
Some district secretaries attending the meeting reportedly expressed that forming an alliance with BJP now could be a safe strategy to avoid emerging challenges for the party and its leader. However, they also confirmed that they would follow Vijay’s decision, whatever it may be.
Amid this backdrop, Vijay is scheduled to travel to Delhi today (March 14) for the CBI investigation regarding the Karur joint congestion case. With the inquiry planned for tomorrow, his departure a day early has already sparked political debate. Reports suggest that Vijay may stay overnight at a Delhi hotel and could hold confidential talks with BJP national leaders. Such a meeting, if it occurs, would make TVK’s integration into the BJP-led camp almost certain.
