Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba welcomes PM Modi, calls India-Japan ties key to global growth
Leaders discuss cooperation in AI, space, clean energy; Japan to double investment target in India during 15th Annual Summit in Tokyo.
Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba today welcomed his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, highlighting that Japan's advanced technology and India's outstanding talent are instrumental in dramatic expansion of economic ties between the two nations.
In a post on X, Ishiba stated, "I warmly welcome Prime Minister Modi's visit to Japan. I look forward to discussing the strengthening of Japan-India relations in various fields with the Prime Minister."
Ishiba also emphasized the importance of cooperation between Japan and India, noting that Japan has been instrumental in supporting India’s Make in India initiative. "Japan's advanced technology and India's outstanding talent complement each other, leading to a dramatic expansion of our economic ties," Ishiba said during the India-Japan Economic Forum, where he addressed the ongoing collaboration between the two countries.
Highlighting Japan’s role, Ishiba remarked, "Many Japanese companies are playing a key role in the Make in India initiative, with cooperation extending globally. Today, the signing of new cooperation documents between our companies demonstrates Japan's firm commitment to further its investment in India and strengthening cooperation."
He said these efforts demonstrate a steady development of supply chains centered around both nations.
The two leaders also discussed the deepening collaboration in emerging sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), space exploration, and clean energy. Ishiba pointed out that both countries were jointly working in critical areas like semiconductors and biofuels, alongside promoting people-to-people exchanges and leveraging each other's technology and markets.
“Key initiatives include promoting people-to-people exchanges, leveraging technology and markets under Prime Minister Modi’s self-reliant India policy, and collaborating in critical sectors like semiconductors and biofuels,” Ishiba stated, emphasizing the importance of these efforts in the context of global economic security and resilient supply chains.
The growing cooperation across various sectors underlined the shared vision of both countries to ensure mutual growth and a stronger economic partnership in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Tokyo today for his two-day official visit to Japan. During his stay, PM Modi will attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, where he will also meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
The talks, to be held on the first day of PM's trip, are expected to see Japan pledging to double its investment target in India, and the two sides are likely to unveil a raft of agreements to expand cooperation in a range of areas, including trade, investment, defence, and science and technology. PM Modi today met Japanese industrialists and political leaders in Tokyo.
