Sikh Groups Demand Ban on Movie; Actress Seeks Police Protection Amid Rising Tensions
Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has received death threats from Sikh extremist groups ahead of the release of her next film 'Emergency', in which she plays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The threats came after the trailer of the film was released on social media. The Mandi MP has sought help from the police in the matter.
In a video on social media, Christian-turned-Nihang Sikh Vicky Thomas Singh makes an indirect reference to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi – played by Ranaut in the film.
The man said in the video, "If in the movie he (Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale) is portrayed as a terrorist, remember what happened to the person (Indira Gandhi) whose movie you are doing. Who were Satwant Singh and Beant Singh? We will offer our heads to but those who can offer heads can also chop off them off."
Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were two of Indira Gandhi's bodyguards who assassinated her on October 31, After these threats, Kangana Ranaut has now sought help from the police by sharing a video on X. “Please consider this,” she wrote, also tagging Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab police.
Several Sikh organizations have demanded a ban on the film, which will be released on September 6, claiming it portrays the Sikh community in a bad way. The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee said Bhindrawale had been declared a martyr of the community and it was wrong to portray the entire Sikh community as separatists.
