PM Modi Reaffirms Commitment to Empowering the Girl Child on National Girl Child Day
Says sustained focus on education, skills and healthcare over the past decade has helped create opportunities for girls to thrive and contribute to a developed India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a life of dignity, opportunity and hope for every girl child. Marking National Girl Child Day, he said consistent efforts over the past decade in areas such as education, skill development and healthcare have helped create an environment where girls can grow, succeed and contribute meaningfully to the nation.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said empowering girls remains at the heart of India’s development journey. He noted that focused interventions have led to better outcomes for girls across the country, enabling them to play a vital role in building a developed India, or Viksit Bharat.
PM Modi highlighted that the progress of girls and women is essential to the country’s social and economic future. He said government initiatives have helped create conditions in which the girl child can flourish and actively participate in national growth.
Over the last ten years, several schemes aimed at improving the status of girls have been launched or expanded, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, along with programmes addressing nutrition, maternal health and access to education. Government data shows steady growth in female enrolment in schools and colleges, as well as improvements in healthcare indicators such as institutional deliveries and immunisation.
Observed every year on January 24, National Girl Child Day was introduced by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to promote awareness about girls’ rights and gender equality. The occasion also highlights the need to tackle ongoing challenges such as child marriage, discrimination and unequal access to opportunities.
Officials said the government remains committed to strengthening policies that ensure girls not only survive but thrive, describing their empowerment as a non-negotiable pillar of India’s progress.
