Delhi Bus Driver ‘Attempts to Run Over’ Woman Passenger After Refusing to Open Door
Incident on Route 569 near Peeragarhi raises fresh concerns over passenger safety in Delhi’s public transport system
New Delhi, March 10: Around 11:50 a.m. today, the driver of a passenger bus in Delhi allegedly attempted to deliberately run over a woman passenger with the vehicle.
Two women were trying to board a bus that was standing at a bus stop. Despite their repeated requests, the driver refused to open the door. One of the women then took the bold step of standing in front of the bus in protest, hoping that the driver would be compelled to open the door.
Instead, the driver slowly moved the bus toward her and appeared to attempt to run her over. Realising the danger to her life, she initially tried to resist but soon stepped aside to save herself. After intimidating her in this manner, the driver drove the bus forward. Fortunately, a major accident was narrowly avoided.
Coincidentally, this unusual and disturbing incident occurred in the presence of this journalist. The middle-aged driver seemed angered by the fact that the woman passenger had not boarded a non-AC bus that was standing ahead of the AC bus and was now attempting to board the AC bus instead. Frustrated by this, he refused to allow both women to board his bus.
Despite repeated requests by the women to open the door, the driver refused. Instead, he gestured toward the non-AC bus standing ahead and indicated that they should board that one. The non-AC private bus was, in fact, already standing further ahead near a red light beyond the bus stand.
One of the women then stood in front of the bus, hoping that the driver would be forced to open the door. However, her assumption proved wrong. The driver slowly drove the bus forward, creating the frightening impression that he might run her over. Facing the driver and walking backward cautiously, she took two or three steps in retreat. Seeing the driver’s aggressive behaviour, she ultimately chose to step aside to save her life, after which the bus moved ahead.
This bizarre act was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras installed at the location as well as cameras inside the bus.
The incident once again raises serious concerns about the safety and dignity of women passengers in Delhi. Despite the presence of a woman Chief Minister, incidents that undermine respect for women continue to occur, highlighting the increasingly uncontrolled condition of the city’s public transport system.
The bus involved operates under the Delhi Transport Department on route number 569. The incident reportedly took place at a bus stop shortly before Peeragarhi while the bus was travelling from Punjabi Bagh toward Sultanpuri.
