A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Bangladesh's cpaital, Dhaka on Friday, with tremors felt as far as Kolkata and several parts of Northeast India, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake’s epicentre was in Narsingdi, approximately 50 km from Dhaka, at a depth of 10 km. So far, no damage, injuries, or casualties have been reported.
In Kolkata, people experienced tremors around 10:10 am for a few seconds. Tremors were also felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar and Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur.
Tremors were reported in Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong as well.
The earthquake also briefly disrupted the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka. The game resumed after a few minutes, and no damage was reported.
Another earthquake shook parts of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh early Friday, though no loss of life or property has been reported.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremor, measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at 12:39 am at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The quake was mild as only a few residents felt the vibrations and briefly stepped out of their homes. Most people did not notice any shaking.
Chamba district falls under Seismic Zone V, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in India, where low-intensity tremors are recorded regularly.
District authorities confirmed that the situation remains normal, with no damage reported. Residents have been advised to stay alert and follow basic safety precautions due to the area’s high seismic vulnerability.
