Northeastern part of India continue to face sweltering heat, dust storms, and erratic weather, the Northeast is grappling with a far more severe crisis. Days of relentless rain have triggered deadly floods and landslides, claiming dozens of lives across the region. Among the victims are three army personnel who lost their lives in a tragic landslide in Sikkim on Monday.

According to reports from authorities and media, at least 34 people have died in the Northeast over the last four days due to rain-related incidents. While Reuters reported the death toll, it has not yet been independently confirmed.

Sikkim Landslide Tragedy

A devastating landslide hit a military camp in Chhaten, near Lachen town in Sikkim’s Mangan district, around 7 PM on Sunday. Triggered by heavy rain, the landslide led to the deaths of three army personnel, with six others still missing. Four individuals were rescued with minor injuries, according to a defence official. Rescue operations are underway, and more than 1,000 tourists stranded in the area are being evacuated.

Assam Floods Worsen

In Assam, the flood situation remains grim. At least 10 people have died so far this season as rising water levels continue to impact large parts of the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has warned of continued rainfall, predicting heavy to very heavy showers in some areas and extremely heavy rain in isolated pockets.Schools Shut in Mizoram

In Mizoram, heavy rains and subsequent landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls have disrupted life in Aizawl district. Authorities have shut all schools on June 2 to ensure student safety. The decision followed warnings from the IMD and discussions with disaster management officials, according to Aizawl Deputy Commissioner ET Lalrempuia.

Delhi Weather Alert

Meanwhile, the national capital is under a yellow alert. The IMD has warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Delhi on Monday and Tuesday. Despite the storm warning, temperatures in the city remained relatively pleasant. Monday's maximum was 36.1°C—almost 4 degrees below average—while the minimum dropped to 22.6°C, also well below normal. Cloudy skies and light rain or thunderstorms are expected to continue for the next two days.

Rescue Ops in Arunachal Pradesh

In Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian Air Force conducted a daring rescue early Monday, airlifting 14 people who were stranded due to flooding in the Bomjir River, Lower Dibang Valley. Using an Mi-17 helicopter, the IAF managed to bring all individuals to safety.

Rajasthan Prepares for Rain

Rajasthan is expecting some relief from the heat. A fresh western disturbance is expected to bring light to moderate rain and thunderstorms between June 2 and 4, especially in the Kota, Udaipur, and Bharatpur regions, according to IMD scientist Radheshyam Sharma.

Southern India Sees Early Monsoon

The monsoon arrived early in Kerala and has already made its way through parts of South India and into Maharashtra. Since May 24, the region has seen heavy rainfall. The IMD's latest forecast expects light to moderate rain and thunderstorms—with gusty winds—in Kerala, interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and nearby areas.

India's weather is currently split between extremes—searing heat in some regions, life-threatening floods in others. Authorities continue to issue advisories and carry out rescue operations, urging people to stay alert and safe.
