Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid heartfelt tributes to Goa’s Agriculture Minister and former Chief Minister Ravi Naik, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 79 due to cardiac arrest. Remembering Naik as a veteran leader and committed public servant, PM Modi highlighted his significant role in shaping Goa’s development over the decades.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Ravi Naik Ji, Minister in the Goa Government. He will be remembered as an experienced administrator and dedicated public servant who enriched Goa's development trajectory. He was particularly passionate about empowering the downtrodden and marginalised. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."

Ravi Naik’s political career spanned several decades, during which he held some of the highest offices in the state. He served as the Chief Minister of Goa twice—first from January 1991 to May 1993, and again briefly in 1994. Known for his administrative acumen and grounded political approach, Naik also held multiple important portfolios throughout his career.

A seasoned legislator, Naik was a seven-time Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly, representing the Ponda constituency. His influence extended beyond state politics as well—he was elected to the Lok Sabha from North Goa in 1998 as a Congress candidate. His ability to connect with people on grassroots issues made him a respected figure across party lines.

Even in his later years, Naik remained active in public life and continued to work for the welfare of farmers and rural communities as the state’s Agriculture Minister. His efforts to uplift marginalised sections and improve Goa’s agricultural infrastructure were widely acknowledged.

His demise marks the end of an era in Goan politics. Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, with leaders remembering him as a pillar of Goan public life and a committed advocate for development and social equity.
