Punjab Police Clarifies Statewide Vehicle Checks Were Based on Security Intelligence Inputs
The operation, conducted under senior supervision across select locations, was aimed at curbing ISI-backed cross-border smuggling of drugs and arms; officials assured minimal public inconvenience.
The Punjab Police today clarified that the state-wide checks of commercial vehicles on the intervening night of November 1 and 2 was carried out following specific intelligence inputs related to security threats.
According to a police spokesperson, the operation focused on vehicles transporting various goods and was conducted under the supervision of gazetted officers at select locations to ensure the process remained systematic and did not inconvenience the general public.
The spokesperson said that Punjab, being a sensitive border state, continues to face attempts by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to destabilize India through cross-border smuggling of drugs, arms and explosives, often facilitated by drones. These contraband items are then moved across the state using different types of vehicles.
The spokesperson noted that such anti-national networks have been changing their methods and have intensified activities since the launch of “Operation Sindoor.”
While acknowledging reports that the checks led to delays in newspaper distribution in some areas, the official assured that the police are mindful of minimizing public inconvenience during such operations.
“The Punjab Police remains fully committed to maintaining internal security while ensuring that essential services and public life are not disrupted,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing the need for a robust internal security grid in view of the prevailing situation.
