Punjab Police Detains Notorious Drug Smuggler Under Anti-Trafficking Act

Gurnam Singh from Kapurthala held for one year under PIT-NDPS provisions after multiple heroin cases; transferred to Central Jail Bathinda

In a major step in Punjab’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh,’ the Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and Kapurthala Police have detained a notorious drug smuggler, Gurnam Singh, from Sainchan village in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala. The detention was carried out under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

The order in this regard, was issued under Section 3 of the PIT-NDPS Act, which allows authorities to detain individuals involved in drug trafficking to prevent further illegal activities. DGP Yadav revealed that Gurnam Singh has been actively engaged in drug peddling and faces three cases under the NDPS Act

“This action will disrupt the drug trafficking network in the region,” he stated.

Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora provided further details, noting that Gurnam Singh was convicted in one case for possessing 250 grams of heroin in June 2016. Additionally, he was arrested with 2 kilograms of heroin in March 2017 and 400 grams in September 2021. The accused has been detained for one year and transferred to Central Jail Bathinda for close monitoring.

Punjab Police reaffirmed their commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking by rigorously enforcing the PIT-NDPS Act against offenders in the state.
