Safdarjung Hospital Launches Free Neuromodulation Services for Mental Health Patients

The Department of Psychiatry at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, has taken an important step toward strengthening mental healthcare by launching free neuromodulation services for the public. These services include Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (mECT), and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)—modern treatment options that offer hope to patients who do not respond well to standard therapies.

The inauguration ceremony was held on December 6, 2025, at the Department of Psychiatry. The moment was made special by the presence of Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Director, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital; Dr. Charu Bamba, Medical Superintendent; and Dr. Pankaj Verma, Head of Department, Psychiatry

Their encouragement, guidance, and continued support have played a crucial role in bringing this state-of-the-art facility to life.

During the event, the dignitaries spoke about the urgent need for accessible and innovative mental health services. They highlighted how introducing these advanced, evidence-based therapies *at zero cost* will benefit people living with severe depression, obsessive–compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions that often require more than medication or counselling alone.

This initiative underlines the department’s commitment to compassionate, equitable, and science-driven care. It also supports the Government of India’s efforts to make mental health services more widely available across the country.

With this launch, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital reinforces its long-standing mission: ensuring that no patient is denied modern medical care because of financial constraints.
