Second-Highest May Rainfall in Over a Century Hits Delhi as IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Rain lashes Delhi on May 3, 2025, as heavy rain and strong winds swept through the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning about rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds—up to 40 km/h—are on the way. The weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy with light showers throughout the day.
What to Expect This Week
This unsettled weather seems to continue for almost a week. Delhi is likely to see more thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and even hail in some parts, in the coming days. Temperatures will range between 34°C during the day and drop to around 21°C at night. The IMD is urging people to stay cautious and avoid venturing out during severe weather.
Rain Breaks Records
Friday morning brought a record-breaking downpour. Safdarjung, Delhi’s main weather station, recorded 77 mm of rain in just six hours—making it the second-highest 24-hour rainfall for May since records began in 1901. The highest spot still belongs to May 2021, with 119.3 mm which led to waterlogged roads, fallen trees, and half-submerged cars in several parts of the city, including the low-lying Minto Road area.
Stormy Weather Across India
It’s not just Delhi. The IMD has forecast severe weather across several regions of the country in the coming days. Eastern and central India can expect thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and even hail until May 6. in these areas, up to 60 km/h the wind speeds may reach. In northwest India, parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, thunderstorms and dust storms are likely to continue until May 7.
The IMD advises everyone to stay weather-aware and follow safety guidelines, especially during periods of heavy rain or strong winds.
