A senior Congress leader was shot by unidentified assailants who entered his house on the pretext of seeking work in Punjab’s Moga district on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The injured leader, identified as former councillor Narinderpal Singh Sidhu, sustained gunshot wounds to his shoulder and leg. He was rushed to a private hospital in Moga, where doctors said his condition is stable, but he remains under medical observation.

According to police and family members, the incident occurred around 3 pm in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar area. Sidhu was sitting with his family in a park area inside his house when two masked men arrived, claiming they had some work. Moments after entering, they allegedly opened fire without any warning and fled the scene.

Senior police officials and a forensic team reached the spot soon after receiving information and began an investigation. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined to trace the attackers.

Congress leader Dharampal Singh said Sidhu had been expressing concerns about threats to his life for the past six months and had repeatedly sought police protection. “Despite his requests, no concrete security arrangements were made,” he alleged.

City-1 police station SHO Inspector Varun Kumar said preliminary findings suggest the incident may be linked to personal enmity. “The victim’s statement is being recorded. Action will be taken based on facts that emerge during the investigation,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said the law-and-order situation in the state has deteriorated. He warned that the party would launch a strong protest if the accused are not arrested promptly, alleging that people are no longer safe even inside their homes.
