The Supreme Court of India on Monday agreed to urgently hear the case of Ashoka University professor, Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who was arrested over a social media post related to Operation Sindoor. Chief Justice BR Gavai listed the matter for hearing on Tuesday after it was brought before the court for swift consideration.

Representing Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad in court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that his arrest stemmed from what he described as an “entirely patriotic” statement about Operation Sindoor. Sibal told the Supreme Court that the arrest violated Mahmudabad’s fundamental right to free speech and expression, and insisted that the FIR was filed without any valid legal basis.

Mahmudabad, who is an associate professor and head of the Political Science department at Ashoka University in Haryana, was taken into custody on Sunday. This followed a complaint filed by a BJP youth wing member over a social media post he made about the military operation.
