A suspected blast rocked Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday, adding to the already tense atmosphere following the recent arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik. According to sources, the explosion occurred near Dumri Mohalla, close to the Jamia Masjid in Doda. Police have reached the scene, and an investigation is underway. Two individuals have been detained for questioning.

The district has been on edge since Monday, when Malik was detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), which allows detention without trial for up to two years in some cases. He was lodged in Kathua jail shortly after his arrest. Malik, who won the Doda assembly seat in 2024 by over 4,500 votes, is the first sitting MLA in J\&K to be booked under PSA.

His detention sparked violent protests and clashes with security forces in multiple areas. Over 80 people have been detained, and prohibitory orders remain in place for the third day. Mobile internet and WiFi services have also been suspended as a precaution. Section 163 of the BNSS Act has been invoked, restricting public movement without permission.

Security has been tightened across Doda town, Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thathri, with concertina wires placed near government buildings and police vehicles making announcements urging people to stay indoors.

On Wednesday, defiant protesters clashed with security forces at three locations, prompting baton charges. Several demonstrators, including women, were detained and some were later released. At least eight police personnel, including a deputy superintendent and a station house officer, were reportedly injured during earlier clashes.

All schools in the district have been shut until Sunday, and markets remain closed amid fears of further unrest. The district administration described Malik’s arrest as a response to “provocative speeches and abusive language” he allegedly used on social media to disturb public peace.

Malik’s father, Shamas Din Malik, has appealed for his release, saying he no longer wishes to pursue legal options. “I want my son back. I met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who assured me he would look into the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has condemned the arrest, calling it politically motivated. At a protest in Jammu, AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the Centre of misusing laws to silence dissent. “We will fight this injustice on the streets, in Parliament, and if needed, in the Supreme Court,” he said.
