More Than 5,000 Teachers Hired in Seven Years, Says Tripura Chief Minister
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said that the state government has recruited more than 5,000 teachers over the past seven years as part of its push to strengthen the education system.
Speaking at the state-level Teachers' Day event, Saha—who also holds the Education portfolio—highlighted that a total of 19,800 people have been hired across various departments in this period, with 5,215 of them being teachers.
“Our focus is on recruiting quality teachers to ensure quality education in government schools,” he said.
Addressing concerns over Dearness Allowance (DA), Saha acknowledged the gap between state and central government employees. Currently, Tripura government employees receive 33% DA, while central government employees get 55%.
“In the 29 months since I became chief minister, I have released 29% DA. We’re actively working to bridge the gap between the DA rates. There is no need for protests—your concerns are being addressed,” he assured.
Saha also shared the government's vision to turn Tripura into an educational hub in the Northeast. He announced plans to upgrade the existing women’s college into a full-fledged state university exclusively for women.
“You’ll hear some good news about this soon,” he said, adding that three new general degree colleges will also be set up in Ambassa, Karbook, and Kakraban.
On the healthcare front, the chief minister revealed plans to increase the number of MBBS seats in the state from 400 to 500. At present, Tripura has three medical colleges offering a total of 400 seats.
The government is also working on regularising the ad-hoc promotions of government employees.
“I’ve already held discussions with legal experts on the issue. We’re exploring how to regularise these promotions, and I expect a positive outcome soon,” Saha said.
