Umang-2026 Concludes in Patna; GEC Muzaffarpur Crowned Top Institute
Six-day state sports and cultural fest at Patliputra Sports Complex sees 1,840 students participate; Minister Sunil Kumar announces bigger ‘Umang 2027’
The state-level sports festival, "Umang-2026," organized by the Department of Science, Technology, and Technical Education, concluded today at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna. The event, which ran from February 7th to 12th, included state-level competitions for students from government polytechnic institutes (GPEs) from February 7th to 9th, and for students from government engineering colleges (GECs) from February 10th to 12th. Based on the combined performance in all sports, literary, and cultural competitions, the Government Engineering College, Muzaffarpur, was declared the top institute of the year. The winners in various categories were awarded by the Honorable Minister of Science, Technology, and Technical Education, Mr. Sunil Kumar.
On this occasion, the Honorable Minister of Science, Technology, and Technical Education, Mr. Sunil Kumar, congratulated all participants and stated that the enthusiasm, discipline, and competitive spirit with which this six-day event was conducted was commendable. He praised the efforts of all the students, faculty members, and organizing team involved in the event. He further stated that such events not only provide a platform for students to showcase their talent at the state level but also play a vital role in their overall personality development.
The Honorable Minister also stated that under the leadership of Honorable Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar, sports and talent are being continuously promoted in the state. The establishment of a separate Sports Ministry, the construction of stadiums, and schemes like "Bring a Medal, Get a Job" are providing recognition and opportunities to athletes. He stated that events like "Umang" provide an opportunity to identify hidden talents in the fields of sports, literature, and culture in a timely manner and show young people the direction to progress. Recognizing the successful organization of the event and the enthusiasm of the students, the Honorable Minister stated that "Umang 2027" will be organized on a larger scale next year.
In the cricket competition, Government Engineering College, Sitamarhi won the title by defeating Government Engineering College, Aurangabad in the final. In the chess competition, Vidya Bharti of Government Engineering College, Muzaffarpur, won first place in the girls' category, while Akanksha Raj of Government Engineering College, Purnia, finished second. In the boys' category, Rishikesh Kumar of Government Engineering College, Sasaram, won, and Shiv Shekhar of Government Engineering College, Motihari, finished runner-up.
In table tennis, the team from Government Engineering College, Gaya, won the girls' category, while Government Engineering College, Vaishali, finished runner-up. Government Engineering College, Muzaffarpur, won the boys' title. In the badminton competition, Government Engineering College, Vaishali, won the girls' category, and Government Engineering College, Madhepura, won the boys' category.
In the Kabaddi competition, Government Engineering College, Bakhtiyarpur (Patna), won the girls' category, and Government Engineering College, Jamui, won the boys' category. In the volleyball competition, Government Engineering College, Katihar, defeated Government Engineering College, Banka, in the girls' category, while Government Engineering College, Bakhtiyarpur, defeated Government Engineering College, Arwal, to win the title.
During this, departmental secretary Dr. Pratima, in her address, informed that under the six-day 'Umang-2026', sports, literary and cultural competitions were organized for the students of government polytechnic institutes from 7th to 9th February and for the students of government engineering colleges from 10th to 12th February. During this period, around 1,840 students from various institutes of the state participated in the sports competitions, in which 930 participants were from the engineering college category. The secretary said that all the competitions were conducted with high level of competition, discipline and sportsmanship.
