In a significant step forward in the investigation into the tragic death of beloved Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, the Singapore Police Force has finally handed over the full autopsy report. The news, which broke this afternoon, confirmed that the report and preliminary findings were given to the High Commission of India today, a move that authorities and the public alike have been anxiously awaiting. This crucial document is expected to provide vital clues and a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s drowning accident in Singapore on September 19.

While this key piece of evidence makes its way to investigators, the probe here in Assam has been escalating rapidly. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has been making swift moves, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to four this week. Just yesterday, on Thursday, the team arrested Garg’s co-musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta. Their arrests came just a day after two other high-profile figures were taken into custody on Wednesday: Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East India Festival where Garg was performing, and the singer’s manager, Siddharth Sharma. All four have been presented before the court in Guwahati and remanded to 14-day police custody for extensive questioning.

The intensity of the investigation stems directly from the top, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma taking a personal interest in uncovering the truth. After promising a thorough probe, he had issued lookout notices for Mahanta and Sharma when they were initially untraceable. In a very public warning during a Facebook live stream, the Chief Minister had given them an ultimatum to surrender by October 6, stating, "Don’t play with the public’s patience... police will find you and bring you back."

With four key associates now in custody and the long-awaited autopsy report finally in the hands of Indian officials, there is a renewed sense of hope that the questions surrounding the untimely death of the 52-year-old legend will soon be answered.
