The family of late Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking the constitution of a special court, an expedited trial in Assam, and diplomatic-legal intervention in Singapore following his death on September 19, 2025.

In a letter shared by Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, the family described the singer as “not only a member of our family but a cultural voice of Assam and India’s North-East,” adding that his sudden passing left “a grieving family and millions of followers seeking clarity on the circumstances of his death.”

The letter noted that the Indian High Commission in Singapore coordinated post-mortem procedures immediately after the incident. Subsequently, the family filed an FIR with the CID, Assam, which led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). After nearly three months of investigation, the Assam Police filed a charge sheet exceeding 2,500 pages, invoking sections relating to murder.

The family also engaged with the Coroner in Singapore for clarity on the sequence of events, safety measures, and emergency response. “These questions are lawful and they are the human rights of a family whose loved one died under circumstances that remain contested,” the letter stated.

The family made five specific requests to the government:

Constitution of a Special Court in India for focused adjudication and to avoid procedural delays.

Appointment of experienced prosecutors to strengthen the case.

Fast-tracking the trial to ensure timely justice.

Ensuring that none of the accused are granted bail until the case concludes.

Active diplomatic and legal engagement with Singapore to access evidence and monitor proceedings.

The family emphasized their trust in the Prime Minister’s office to handle the case with seriousness and transparency, stating: “We are a family in grief, but also citizens of a Republic founded on justice.”

According to reports, Garg, 52, drowned near Lazarus Island in Singapore after removing a life jacket during a yacht party. CPR was administered, but he was pronounced dead later that day. The Assam government has appointed Special Public Prosecutors, including Senior Advocate Ziaul Kamar, and allocated Rs. 5 crore to the Zubeen Garg Memorial Trust. In December 2025, seven alleged accused were produced before the District and Sessions Court of Kamrup (Metro) in Guwahati.
