William Osler's quote "The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease" pretty much sums up the career of Dr Jasvinder Paintal who has healed numerous patients in her 29 year long career as a doctor. Born on April 30, 1969 in Jammu to Colonel Ujjal Singh Paintal and Mrs Surrinder Paintal, Jessie as Jasvinder Paintal is known by her classmates and colleagues, did her initial schooling at The JB Petit High School for Girls, Mumbai and St. Mary's Convent, Kanpur before passing out from The Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. It was Jessie's mother's dream and desire to see her daughter become a doctor so that she could serve humanity. And Jasvinder lived up to her mother's expectations by working hard to become a doctor. After doing her MBBS from M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru, Jessie went on to do her Masters in Internal Medicine. She did her M.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, USA. In 2002 charged with the passion to serve her country and its people, she returned to India after completing her M.D, graduating in the top 5% of her class. Although she could have easily settled in the US and lived the dream life. Despite numerous pressures from her friends and relatives to settle in USA, Jessie was clear of her choice, that her country could greatly benefit from knowledge and talents she had acquired from training in the US. Dr. Jasvinder now works at a private hospital in New Delhi. Here, she in her own unique way helps the less privileged and unfortunate. These are patients who come to the hospital as their final destination, with meagre to no means in the hope of being cured of advanced serious diseases. She has been known to often pay for their treatment and medicines. She frequently provides free medical care to the economically weaker sections of the society, this way they benefit from getting medical care in a technologically advanced centre. This is Dr Jasvinder Paintal's way of contributing in her own humble way in uplifting the less fortunate sections of the society, thereby living up to her ideals of not staying in USA permanently after her post-graduation and coming back to India. The words of Nina Hagen, the famous German musician aptly fit Dr Jasvinder Paintal "Do some selfless service for people who are in need. Consider the whole picture, not just our little selves" About the Writer – Lt Col JS Sodhi (Retd) The writer who retired from the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army is an alumnus of NDA, Khadakwasla and IIT Kanpur.
