Mahabalipuram (Chengalpattu): Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Thursday firmly dismissed speculation around a “90-seat, 50-50” power-sharing arrangement, asserting that no alliance negotiations were underway and describing the circulating reports as “baseless rumours”.

His remarks came a day after Aadhav Arjuna, general secretary of the election management wing of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), referred to multiple “deal talks” involving seat-sharing ratios. Vijay, however, sought to draw a clear line, reiterating that his party would chart an independent course.

Speaking at an iftar gathering organised by TVK in Mahabalipuram to mark the holy month of Ramzan, Vijay joined attendees in breaking the fast and later addressed party workers and the public. The event saw a turnout of over a thousand participants.

“From the day we entered politics, motivated rumours have been spread about us. They say we will join this front or that camp. Let me state this clearly once again — we belong to the people,” he said, pushing back against what he termed a “deliberate attempt” to create confusion among supporters.

Reaffirming his party’s ideological position, Vijay stressed that there would be no compromise on secular principles. “We are firm that governance will be under our leadership. As I said at our first state conference, we will not dilute our policies for anyone or anything. Do not believe the misinformation being spread,” he told the gathering.

The TVK chief concluded on a note of confidence, expressing faith in achieving the party’s political goals “with the grace of the Almighty”.

In recent days, reports had suggested that the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, was exploring the possibility of bringing Vijay into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). There were also claims of backchannel efforts involving Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.

The speculation gained further traction after Aadhav Arjuna, speaking at a recent TVK public meeting in Chennai’s Kolathur, alluded to “90 seats and 50-50” proposals, while asserting that Vijay preferred to stand independently for the people.

With his latest statement, Vijay has effectively sought to put an end to the swirling conjecture, maintaining that no such negotiations had taken place and underscoring TVK’s intent to remain politically autonomous.
