Vijay’s Election Bid in Doubt Ahead of Tamil Nadu Polls as Divorce Case Raises Asset Disclosure Concerns

Legal complications linked to spouse asset disclosure may impact Vijay’s nomination as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam gears up for solo electoral debut

Vijay’s political ambitions ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have run into unexpected turbulence, with developments in his personal life threatening to complicate his electoral entry.

The state is set to go to polls on April 23, and Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is widely expected to make its electoral debut as a standalone force. Despite earlier speculation about a possible alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, party functionaries have indicated that it will contest all 234 constituencies independently.

Within party circles, there has been sustained discussion over Vijay’s choice of constituency. While names such as Tiruchi and Nagapattinam initially did the rounds, recent indications suggest that he may opt for the Perambur seat in Chennai. Preparations on the ground, including the setting up of an air-conditioned campaign office, have added weight to this possibility.

However, a significant legal and procedural hurdle has now emerged. Under election norms, candidates are required to submit detailed affidavits disclosing their assets at the time of filing nominations. This is where Vijay’s situation appears to have become complicated.

His wife, Sangeetha Vijay, has reportedly filed for divorce, raising allegations in her petition regarding his personal conduct and seeking maintenance commensurate with his social and financial standing. She has also sought interim relief, including permission to continue residing in their Neelankarai residence until the case is resolved.

The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing on April 20 before the Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court—just days before the election. Crucially, despite their separation, the couple is not yet legally divorced. This means that Vijay may be required to disclose not only his own assets but also those of his spouse in his nomination papers.

Legal observers point out that any discrepancy or omission in these disclosures could potentially lead to the rejection of a candidate’s nomination. Given the reported strain in their relationship, uncertainties over the inclusion of his spouse’s financial details could pose a serious risk to Vijay’s candidature.

The developments have added a layer of unpredictability to Vijay’s political entry. Having already conducted candidate interviews for around 60 constituencies, the actor-turned-politician had appeared poised for a high-profile debut. Yet, the intersection of personal litigation and electoral compliance now threatens to derail those plans.

Married in 1999, Vijay and Sangeetha have shared over two decades of marital life. The current dispute, however, has brought their relationship into the public spotlight, generating intense discussion across both film and political circles.

With multiple challenges already confronting him—including issues linked to ongoing investigations and delays surrounding film releases—this latest turn of events marks a critical juncture for Vijay. Political analysts suggest that how he navigates this phase could have a lasting impact on his nascent political career.
