Gill Backs Rohit and Kohli for 2027 ODI World Cup: "India Needs Them"
Shubman Gill Signals Continuity, Backs Rohit and Kohli for ODI Future
Newly-appointed India ODI captain Shubman Gill has made his stance clear on the future of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, firmly stating that both players remain vital to India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi, Gill addressed ongoing speculation about whether the team is transitioning away from the Rohit-Kohli era. “Yes, definitely,” Gill said when asked if he sees the veteran duo playing a major role in the next World Cup.
He praised their unmatched experience and winning mentality, noting how rare it is to find players with their combination of skill and leadership. “The matches they’ve won for India, their quality and experience – it’s not something you come across often,” he said.
With both Rohit and Kohli having retired from T20Is and Tests, ODIs remain the only format they are available for. Kohli is currently in London, while Rohit is in Mumbai, but both are expected to join the squad in New Delhi before heading to Australia on October 15.
At 25, Gill is set to lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia beginning October 19. Reflecting on his new role, Gill shared that he was informed of the captaincy decision after the first Test against West Indies, although he had known it was coming.
“It’s an honour to lead India,” Gill said. He also credited former captain Rohit Sharma for creating a calm and cohesive team environment. “The calmness Rohit bhai brought to the dressing room — I want to carry that forward,” he added.
Gill also spoke about his working relationship with new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is leading India through a period of transition. “Our conversations often focus on making players feel secure and building a strong pool of fast bowlers,” Gill revealed.
With limited ODIs scheduled before 2027, Gill’s vocal support for Rohit and Kohli sends a clear message of continuity. As India begins a new chapter, Gill seems determined to strike a balance between building for the future and respecting the legacy of two modern greats.
