Quest for a second IPL title of Gujarat Titans came to an end with a 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Eliminator at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. Chasing a daunting 229, GT showed glimpses of fight—especially through a standout innings from Sai Sudharsan—but poor fielding and a struggling bowling attack ultimately let them down on the big night.

Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 228/5, anchored by a classy 81 off 50 balls from Rohit Sharma. Rohit rode his luck, though—he was dropped twice, once on 3 and again on 12. Gerald Coetzee spilled a straightforward chance in the deep, and debutant Kusal Perera—brought in to replace Jos Buttler—missed a regulation catch behind the stumps. Rohit capitalized, punishing GT with a captain’s knock.

To make matters worse for Gujarat, Suryakumar Yadav was also dropped during his quickfire 33 off 20. It all added up to a nightmare in the field, and GT captain Shubman Gilldidn’t mince words after the match. “Definitely not easy when we drop three sitters. It wasn’t easy for the bowlers to control, and it doesn’t help when you drop those catches,” said Gill in the post-match interview, visibly frustrated with the team’s sloppy effort.

Gujarat’s bowling, which had been a key strength earlier in the season, completely unraveled in the latter half of the tournament. Since the IPL resumed, GT found themselves chasing 200+ in all four of their matches. Their only win came in a chase of 200 against Delhi Capitals. In the three games after that, they conceded 235, 230, and now 228—numbers that reflect a serious dip in form at the worst possible time.

Despite the heavy dew making conditions tough, Sai Sudharsan kept Gujarat Titans in the game with a classy 80 off 49 balls. He got great support from Washington Sundar, who played a quick and impactful knock of 48 from just 24 deliveries. Their partnership gave GT a real chance and brought some life back into the chase. But in the final overs, Mumbai’s bowlers held their nerves, tightened things up, and made sure they crossed the line to set up a clash with Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.
