Kagiso Rabada was at his fiery best on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between South Africa and Australia, picking up a sensational five-wicket haul. His figures of 5 for 51 in 15.4 overs helped South Africa bowl out Australia for just 212, giving the Proteas a strong start in the high-stakes clash.

After stumps, Rabada was asked if recent events—particularly his short doping ban—had given him any extra motivation heading into the final. The fast bowler acknowledged the difficult period but said his focus has always been on giving his best for South Africa.

“Yeah, obviously it wasn't my best moment, as I've alluded to. Now, life moves on,” Rabada said. “I think every game that I play for South Africa, I try to do my best. I didn’t give any more or any less than I usually do. That’s all I tried to do today.”

The incident Rabada referred to involved a one-month suspension after a doping violation earlier this year, reportedly due to alleged cocaine use during the SA20 tournament. He had initially left the Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 campaign citing “personal reasons,” only later revealing the real cause.

The 29-year-old did not contest the ban and served the suspension quietly, returning to the national side determined to move forward.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma also addressed the matter during a press conference, saying Rabada had been transparent with his teammates and had put the issue behind him.

“He had a conversation with the team and put himself out there for any questions. As far as we’re concerned, that’s behind us,” Bavuma said. “We’ve come here focused on what we need to do. And I think he's in the best shape he's ever been. Playing against Australia adds an extra layer of motivation for him.”

Rabada’s performance on Day 1 certainly reflected that focus. With the controversy now in the rearview mirror, he’s proving once again why he’s one of the most feared fast bowlers in the world.
