Tripura Golf Association (TGA) and BSF Frontier Headquarters hosted the first Northeast Golf tournament on the edge of Bharat Golf Mohotsav here on Sunday, with over 30 golfers from various regions of India.

Tripura Chief Minister, Dr Manik Saha, inaugurated the event in the BSF Golf Club at Shalbagan here along with Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, General Secretary of the Golf Federation of India (GFI) Ariyavir Arya, TGA President Devid Debbarma, and IG BSF A K Chakraborty.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of an international-standard golf course in the state to elevate Tripura's profile on a national and global level, paving the way for more tourism and investment opportunities.

Expressing optimism, Dr Saha said this as the beginning of a new era for sports and business in Tripura, and commented, "I am thrilled to inaugurate the first-ever golf tournament in the Northeast under the Bharat Golf Mahotsav. It’s a proud milestone for Tripura as we host over 30 golfers from different parts of the country in this inaugural event spearheaded by TGA."

He also noted that unforeseen flight disruptions prevented around 25 golfers from attending the event, but despite several hurdles, the event attracted significant attendance. Highlighting the broader impact of this initiative, Dr Saha envisioned a transformative shift for Tripura to boost tourism, create employment, and foster business growth, showcasing Tripura on a global platform.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy reflected on the origins of this initiative, crediting Devid Debbarma, President of the Tripura Golf Association, with proposing to host this tournament coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birth anniversary.

Roy noted that this was likely the most significant sports event in Northeast India and a first for Tripura. He encouraged greater participation in golf, promising increased support for young aspiring athletes. He also emphasized the state’s potential in promoting golf.

General Secretary of the Golf Federation of India (GFI), Ariyavir Arya, commended TGA and BSF for their commendable efforts. He revealed that a national-level golf tournament is set to be held in Agartala next year, inspired by Tripura's growing interest in the sport.

Arya elaborated on the vision behind Bharat Golf Mahotsav, emphasizing its role in addressing youth-related challenges like drug addiction and obesity. He stressed GFI's mission to debunk misconceptions about golf being an elite sport and promote it as an inclusive activity driven by passion and discipline.
