New COVID-19 Wave Hits Asia as Cases Surge in Hong Kong and Singapore
COVID-19 cases are surging in Hong Kong and Singapore, prompting warnings of a new wave across Asia amid concerns over waning immunity and renewed calls for vaccination.;

Health officials in Hong Kong and Singapore are warning of fresh wave of COVID-19 infections spreading across parts of Asia, according to a report from Bloomberg.
In Hong Kong, COVID-19 activity has reached its highest level since last year. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection, told local media that the virus is spreading widely again. In the week leading up to May 3, the city recorded 31 severe cases — a peak not seen in months. The number of positive respiratory samples is also at its highest level since 2023.
While this current surge isn’t as intense as the city’s largest outbreaks over the past two years, several signs point to increased transmission. COVID-19 is showing up in wastewater, and more people are heading to clinics and hospitals with symptoms.
Cases Climb in Singapore as Well
Singapore is also seeing a noticeable rise in infections. The country’s health ministry reported around 14,200 cases in the week ending May 3 — a 28% increase from the previous week. Hospital admissions also jumped by roughly 30%.
Singapore hasn’t released COVID-19 data in almost a year and only does so when there’s a meaningful spike. While there’s no evidence that new variants are driving this increase, health officials believe fading immunity may be playing a role.
COVID-19 Lingers Across the Region
This resurgence isn’t limited to just two cities. Across Asia, countries have been dealing with intermittent waves for several months. In China, the COVID-19 test positivity rate more than doubled over a five-week period through early May, and infections could soon match last summer’s peak, according to Bloomberg.
Thailand, too, has reported recent outbreaks. Following April’s Songkran festival — a national holiday known for large gatherings — the country saw another wave of infections.
Health officials across the region are reminding the public that COVID-19 hasn’t gone away, even as it becomes a more routine part of life. They’re especially urging older adults and those with underlying health issues to get booster shots.
The virus’s continued spread in summer — a time when other respiratory illnesses usually ease — is a reminder that COVID-19 remains unpredictable.
Adding to the growing list of high-profile cases, Hong Kong pop star Eason Chan recently tested positive and was forced to postpone a series of concerts in Taiwan, according to his official Weibo account.
As countries monitor the current wave, public health experts continue to stress the need for caution, testing, and vaccination to help manage what is now an ongoing part of life in the region.
