The Interim Trade Framework (ITF) agreement between India and the United States has sparked not only economic but also strategic discussions. A post shared by the US Trade Representative (USTR) announcing the agreement has drawn widespread attention. The official map of India shown in this post appears to support New Delhi's stance, which India has maintained on global platforms for decades.

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh shown as integral parts in the map

The infographic shared by USTR demonstrates India's full territorial claim. It depicts the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as entirely within Indian territory. Notably, the map does not provide any separate demarcation, shading, or dotted lines for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) or China-administered Aksai Chin. This depiction is identical to the one used by the Indian government in its political maps since the 2019 reorganization.

A New Signal from the US, a Departure from Its Historical Stand

Historically, the US has often described Jammu and Kashmir as a "disputed territory" in official maps and statements, attempting to maintain neutrality in India-Pakistan relations. However, this time, using a full map of India alongside a significant trade announcement is being seen as a clear and strong message to Islamabad.

Experts believe that Washington has quietly but clearly demonstrated its support for India's integrity on Kashmir.

Who Gains What from the Agreement?

Under this interim framework, announced on February 6, 2026, US exporters receive significant relief in the Indian market. Under this agreement, US dry fruit, sorghum, and grain producers will gain duty-free or reduced duty access to the Indian market. In return, US tariffs on Indian goods have been reduced from 50 percent to 18 percent. This will ease pressure on Indian exporters and open a new chapter in trade relations between the two countries.
